Abstract:
 

X-Ray Diffraction is an experimental technique used to characterize the crystallographic structure, crystallite size (grain size), preferred orientation in polycrystalline materials, or the residual stress state of a crystalline material. The purpose of the lectures will consist to give the fundamentals of x-ray diffraction: basis of the theory of x-ray diffraction, the experimental methods and a few applications.
 

  • phase analysis (peak positions and peak intensity)

  • texture analysis (variation of peak intensity)

  • grain size – microdistortions (peak shape)

  • X-ray strain or stress analysis (shift of peak position)


Agenda:

- Day 1 : Morning (Anf. EA1.31: 9h30m) and afternoon (Anf. B1.10: 14h)

1-Fundamentals of X-ray : production of x-ray, characteristic spectrum, absorption, …
2-Basics of crystallography : lattices, crystal structure, stereographic projection.
3-Introduction to diffraction – Bragg law
4-Scattering by an electron, an atom, a unit cell, structure factor calculations.
5-Reciprocal lattice

- Day 2: Morning (Anf. EA1.31: 9h30m)
1-Intensities of powder diffraction lines
2-Examples of intensity calculations

-Day 2: Afternoon (SEMAT/UM: 14h)
Pratical sessions: diffractogram acquisition and analysis.
We will start with the simplest case of a polycrystalline material composed of a random distribution of crystallites (as for example a powder).

-Day 3 : Morning (Anf. EA1.31: 9h30m)
1-Experimental methods (i.e. goniometers, detectors 0D, 1D, 2D and also Laue diffractogram and/or powder diffractogram).
2-Examples of application : Grain size measurements and texture analysis.

- Day 3: afternoon (SEMAT/UM: 14h)
Pratical sessions: more examples and some exercises (grain size measurements and texture analysis)
